How to photograph soap film

Introduction

When a thin layer of dish soap is put into a bowl of clear water, the result is an iridescent rainbow shimmer will appear on the surface of the water when viewed at an angle. A few small steps and a keen eye for perspective will yield interesting rainbow colored prints.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need

  • A small clear bowl or petry dish
  • Small amount of water to fill the dish
  • Clear liquid dish soap
  • Camera

Steps

1

Step One

Fill your small dish with water.
2

Step Two

Next add a small amount of clear liquid dish soap to the water being careful not to create any bubbles.
3

Step Three

Examine the top layer of the water at different angles through your camera's viewfinder until you find a perspective that shows the water's surface covered with liquid rainbows.
4

Step Four

Take your picture.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • You can also dip a circular wire with handle into the water and hold it up in front of the camera as if to blow bubbles through it. (as seen in title picture above)
