How to be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown

Introduction

If you want to enjoy a vacation without even leaving the city limits or driving outside the county line, take a weekend to play tourist in your own hometown. You'll have a memorable time and save all sorts of money on gas and other travel expenses!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Go online and look up the most popular attractions in your area--it can be easy to miss out on things that are right under your nose. Just imagine, for example, how many New Yorkers have never even been to Liberty Island or the top of the Empire State Building.
2

Step Two

If your budget allows, arrange a night or two at a hotel, motel or bed and breakfast. Campgrounds can also be fun, and odds are there's a state park not far away that you've never spent a night at.
3

Step Three

Take your camera along and buy some postcards of your own area to send to loved ones. If you really want to play tourist, wear some kitschy clothes as well, like a tropical shirt and Bermuda shorts!
4

Step Four

Make reservations at a fancy restaurant, or one you've never been to. You can splurge a little since you're saving money on gas/airfare.
5

Step Five

Pick up a souvenir of your hometown, like a magnet or t-shirt. We all have items like these from places like Hawaii or the Grand Canyon, why not your own backyard?
6

Step Six

Do some a??touristy' activities you wouldn't ordinarily partake in: a walking tour, a sunset cruise or a trip to a historic museum.
7

Step Seven

Challenge yourself to discover the a??best of' various things in your town or city: best view, best hike, best architecture and the like. It will probably make you explore neighborhoods you haven't before, or at least think about all the highlights your area has to offer.
