Errors are part of human nature. Mistakes are rampant in our society, and when it comes to making a mistake that hurts someone you love it can be damaging. Saying your sorry is difficult at times. If you write an apology to a loved one, make it special.

Step One
Be straight. Don't sugarcoat anything you have done. State the situation in the most plain speech as possible. The point of an apology is to show you are sorry, not to defend your case. Boldly state your wrongdoing, and own up to your actions.

Be honest. Writing from your heart is important. Whatever the transgression you must be wholly honest and true in your apology in order to show that you are serious. To write an apology you have to leave all the bull out of your words. Hostility should never enter into an apology. Sincerity must be included.

Explain an understanding of your mistake. Forgiveness is never guaranteed, but if you state fully how you were wrong and how you wish to make amends the possibility of forgiveness increases. State that you can see why the other person was hurt by what you did, and that you had no right to take the actions you took.

Step Four
Impose a penalty for yourself. Plead for forgiveness and impose a penance that you will adhere to in order to earn forgiveness. An apology for a serious hurt can take many forms, but you have to get the point across that you are willing to work for your emotional debt when you write an apology.
