Introduction

The Christian Drama can be a thoughtful addition to worship services, special events, street ministry and fundraising opportunities. Understanding your audience and having clear objectives can make the writing process easy.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Steps

1

Step One

Decide who would like to do writing for the drama group. Use no more than four people as a writing team.
2

Step Two

Get a list of sermon topics several months in advance if writing sermon starters.
3

Step Three

Determine the target audience for the drama. Things will be written with different vocabulary and themes for different groups.
4

Step Four

Find a Bible reference for your drama. Each drama written should have a Biblical theme.
5

Step Five

Set the length of your drama based on your performance time. One page of type-written text equals about 2 minutes of performance time.
6

Step Six

Study the sermon or text to help determine whether your drama should be serious or humorous. This will also depend largely on what the drama will be used for.
7

Step Seven

List your characters and begin writing their exchanges. Keep your length in mind and determine what the outcome will be so you can write to that end.

Tips & Warnings

  • When writing drama, keep your conversations as real as possible. Don't rely on clich??s to move your story along.
  • Drama can tell a great story with minimal words, props or staging. Keep your message simple for the most impact.
  • Write your drama using the fewest number of characters possible to tell the story. Too many characters in a short period doesn't allow for proper character development.
