How to Work to Live

Introduction

In the high stress, fast-paced world we live in, it is easy to get caught up in a cycle of working so much that you don't have time to enjoy down time. Read on to discover ways to work to live and not always live to work.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You'll Need

  • Resume (if you need to look for a new job)
  • Vacation planner

Steps

1

Step One

Recognize and heed the warning signs of too much work in your life. Being tired all the time because you work instead of sleep will make you cranky and could seriously compromise your health.
2

Step Two

Learn to say NO! If you continue to do every task that is asked of you even though it would stretch out your work day, then you need to respectfully and truthfully say "I'm sorry, I don't have the time to do that right now." If an employer can't go along with your ability to say no, then it may be time to find a new job.
3

Step Three

Look for a new job. Sometimes we get so caught up in a schedule that it is difficult to change work patterns. A change of workplace might give you the kickstart needed to modify the work-to-play balance in your life.
4

Step Four

Ask for support from family and friends. When they notice that you are working too much they can tell you to back off of work for a little while. Deadlines are inevitable but every day does not need to be a 12-14 hour marathon of work.
5

Step Five

Separate work from home. Leave work at the office and home as a place of peace where you can forget about what needs to be done at work. After living this way for a while, you will enjoy life more when you work to live and not the opposite.
6

Step Six

Get as far away from work as you possibly can when you take a vacation. There is nothing better than a cruise in the middle of the ocean to completely take your mind off work. This is a true example of working to live and not living to work.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reward yourself for the work that you do. Even if you feel that you need every penny you make to pay a bill, take a small amount to treat yourself for hard work. A matinee movie or inexpensive dinner out when you are tired from working will pick up your spirits and not cost much.
  • Don't overlook the necessity of work as an important part of your life. When the balance is not met and there is too little work performed, you can find yourself not wanting to get up and do anything. Keep the balance between work and play.
