How to Winterize a Riding Lawn Mower
Introduction
A riding lawnmower is a big investment and requires a certain amount of maintenance to keep it in good repair. Your lawn mower will last longer and run better if you take the time to winterize it before storing it away at the end of the season. The following steps will guide you through the process of winterizing your riding lawn mower.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderate
Steps
1
Step One
Clean you riding lawn mower, making sure you remove all of the old grass from the deck and around the blades. Give it a good washing with the outdoor hose to remove all dust and grime.
2
Step Two
Prepare the engine for winter storage. Change the oil and the oil filter. Replace the air filter and inline fuel filter, if applicable.
3
Step Three
Add a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank and run it through the system for a few minutes. Siphon the remaining fuel from the tank; restart the lawn mower and run it until it stops on its own. This will ensure that the tank is empty, and the stabilizer distributes throughout the fuel system.
4
Step Four
Remove the blades and exam them for damage. Sharpen them or replace them with new ones if indicated.
5
Step Five
Lubricate or grease all areas indicated in your instruction manual such as the chassis and mower housing. Tighten all of the screws and bolts on the mower and deck and replace any damaged parts.
6
Step Six
Get the battery prepared for storage by removing it from the riding lawn mower and charging it completely with a charger. Store it in a cool dry place until it is time to get it ready for the next mowing season.
7
Step Seven
Store your mower in a dry, covered area that will protect it from the elements after it has been winterized. A tarp can provide protection if you don't have a garage or storage building available.
