Steps
1
Step One
Position yourself properly for the election. If you're running for President, you'll first need to win the primary election. You'll need to appeal to the extremes of your political party during a primary, because these people are the ones who actively vote and campaign during this stage.
2
Step Two
Fund-raise as much as you can. Money is very important to fund your advertising, travel and staff. Ask groups and wealthy individuals who have similar political affiliations as yourself but don't forget to hold fund-raising events in smaller towns to build recognition as a candidate.
3
Step Three
Tailor your campaign strategy to each state. In a less populated state like New Hampshire, you can campaign by going door-to-door and attending community events. In a more populated state like California, you'll need to rely heavily on advertising to reach voters.
4
Step Four
Remember to use radio advertising. While television ads build image recognition among voters, they are also very expensive. Radio ads are cheaper and can be aired during heavy commuting times to reach a very large audience.
5
Step Five
Ask senators and representatives to campaign for you in their home states. Political networking and support are very important because you have such a large country to campaign across. If elected, you can later return support to the legislators who helped you.
6
Step Six
Run a campaign that promotes your values rather than attacking your opponents. The public has developed somewhat of a disdain for politics because of all of the personal attacks and hostilities in previous elections.
Overall Tips & Warnings
- If you have a fund-raising event, it's often a good idea to pay for an open bar. If people are donating thousands of dollars to your campaign, they should be able to enjoy a free drink or two.
- You'll never be able to win some states because of your party affiliation. Accept the loss of that state and save money by campaigning less there. Remember, you need 270 electoral votes to win, not all of them.
- Avoid using national tragedies as a chance to promote yourself. Attend mourning events in support of those lost and have the respect not to make them political events.
