How to Weed a Paver Patio

Introduction

It starts with one little tiny weed, and the next thing you know, your paver patio is covered with weeds sprawling all over. There are chemical options and non-toxic options for getting rid of weeds. Regular maintenance will ensure that your patio stays weed-free.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Chemical Options

Steps

1

Step One

Purchase a chemical that eliminates weeds. Popular brands include Weed B Gone, Roundup and an organic version called BurnOut.
2

Step Two

Clear your patio of all furniture and potted plants.
3

Step Three

Spray each weed with the chemical weed killer. If there are a large number of weeds, spray the entire weeded area in a sweeping, back-and-forth motion.
4

Step Four

Repeat these steps for any weeds that are still green after 48 hours.
5

Step Five

Sweep up the weeds and dispose of them in a landscape trash bag once the weeds have turned brown and dried. Chemically treated weeds or weeds that have sprouted should not be placed in a compost pile.

Tips & Warnings

  • Attack the weeds before they begin to flower and set seed. This will prevent thousands of weeds from forming the following year.
  • Keep children and pets away from the chemical sprays until they are completely dry.

Non-Toxic Options

Steps

1

Step One

Clear the patio of all furniture and potted plants.
2

Step Two

Fill a spray bottle with white distilled vinegar or lemon juice. Vinegar is cheaper than lemon juice and equally effective. The acid in both sources is what kills the weeds.
3

Step Three

Douse each weed liberally with the vinegar or lemon juice. This works best on a hot, sunny day when the patio is in direct sun.
4

Step Four

Use an alternative method to vinegar or lemon juice by pour boiling water on each weed. This, however, wastes precious water.
5

Step Five

For any weeds left standing after using non-toxic methods of weed removal, put on a pair of gardening gloves and remove each weed by hand.
6

Step Six

Sweep up the weeds and dispose of them in a landscaping garbage bag once the weeds have turned brown and dried up. Weeds should not be placed in a compost pile.
