How to Weave a St. Brigid's Cross

Introduction

Weaving is a relaxing way to pass the time or relieve stress. There are many different designs you can weave. One idea is to weave a St. Brigid's cross. The St. Brigid's cross is believed to invite the blessings of the Goddess in to each room where the cross is hung. Follow these simple steps to learn how to weave your own.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need

  • 28 long wheat straws, no heads

Steps

1

Step One

Immerse the straw in a tub of cool water for 30 minutes. Let it dry wrapped up in a towel for 15 minutes.
2

Step Two

Position 2 straws to make a plus sign, putting the horizontal straw on the top. Fold the upper section of the vertical straw on top of it's other half. Rotate the weave counter clockwise 90 degrees. Repeat to fold the now-vertical straw.
3

Step Three

Rotate 90 degrees counterclockwise. Add another straw by placing it to the right of the folded vertical straw and beneath the folded horizontal straw. Fold it and rotate it again.
4

Step Four

Keep repeating the process without letting the straws bunch up on top of each other. Rest the straws side by side.
5

Step Five

Tie each arm 4 inches from the center of the St. Brigid's cross after all the straws have been added. Trim the ends of the straw.

Tips & Warnings

  • Watch for any gaps. Fill them in by adjusting the straw and tightening them as is necessary.
