How to Wear New Dentures

Introduction

When you return home with your new dentures and look at your smile in the mirror, you'll feel great. Once you go about your daily routine with them for the first time that smile may fade a bit. Wearing new dentures can be a bit trying, but here's what to expect during the acclimation process.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Steps

1

Step One

Practice speaking. Your voice may sound funny the first few weeks that you wear the new dentures. You might develop a lisp or speak in a "Daffy Duck" voice. This is a normal reaction as your mouth adjusts to the dentures. Read in front of a mirror every day until you can speak without an impediment.
2

Step Two

Eat soft foods while getting used to your new dentures. Chew slowly and avoid hard or sticky foods until you can eat them comfortably. Take care to keep food particles from lodging under the dentures.
3

Step Three

Let your tongue adjust to your new dentures. If you feel tempted to "play" with the dentures with your tongue, just let it happen. The tongue needs to get used to the dentures just like your gums or teeth.
4

Step Four

Drink plenty of liquids with meals. Take small bites and distribute food evenly in your mouth as you chew.
5

Step Five

Wear your dentures for at least 24 hours straight after your visit. Your dentist may recommend that you wear the dentures day and night for a specific amount of time. Follow his instructions exactly.
6

Step Six

Keep your dentures clean by using over-the-counter tablets or a mixture recommended by your dentists. Soak them overnight in a purifying solution.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may bite your tongue or cheek while speaking or eating until your mouth is used to the new dentures.
  • Always consult your dentist if you develop unusual sore spots on your gums or suffer from mouth pain or inflammation.
