How to Wear Layers in the Fall

Introduction

When the fall season approaches, it's time to put away the short skirts and midriffs and think about how to wear layers instead. Daring to wear layers in the fall isn't just about trying to stay warm either. Dressing in layers of soft fabrics, layers of accessories and layers of outerwear, all pull together a look for fall that's comfortable and figure flattering.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Choose fabrics that are light and breathable. Bulky multiple layers of cotton and wool will just make you sweat all day long.
2

Step Two

Stick with colors in the same color group when you dress in layers. In fact, dark colors and neutrals work best for most people. Wearing layers of bright colors also has the effect of making you look like an unmade bed.
3

Step Three

Mix up textures when wearing layers, such as combining leather with silk, cashmere with denim, or ruffles with tweed.
4

Step Four

Add some flair to your layering fall wardrobe by pairing layers of monochrome or neutral colors with a single bright accessory. For instance, bright red boots, gloves or a belt adds pleasant pizzazz to an all brown ensemble.
5

Step Five

Layer up on accessories too. One or even two scarves worn in a tiered fashion can add dimension to the look, especially when you add a shawl or cardigan sweater. Don't forget scrunchy gloves and an oversized handbag.
6

Step Six

Wear a large, wide belt over your layers to cinch in your waist and provide feminine allure.
7

Step Seven

Balance your figure when you wear layers. For instance, a wide skirt or pants should be offset with form fitting tops and sweaters, while snug pants should be accompanied with oversized or free flowing tops.
8

Step Eight

Wear heels to give you some added height. Otherwise, wearing layers can make you look lost in the clothing, especially if you have a small stature.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • Strive for comfort more than anything else, especially if you have problem areas with your figure. Nothing portrays beauty better than confidence.
  • You can hide areas of your figure with layers of clothing. For instance, if your stomach is a trouble spot, wear a free-flowing v-neck sweater or top with a camisole layered underneath, a pair of well-fitting jeans and a pair of high heeled boots to create a shape without revealing too much around the middle.
  • Avoid wearing too many oversized layers of clothing if you are unusually short or petite.
  • Avoid combining patterns when layering clothing. Plaid mixed with paisley rarely looks good on anyone.
