How to Wear Layers While Traveling

Introduction

When you're traveling, dressing appropriately can be a challenge when you face two different climates. Wearing layers can help you stay comfortable whenever you deal with extreme temperature changes in one flight.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Steps

1

Step One

Plan ahead. Check weather reports for both home and away before you go. The predicted temperature may not be what you expect. Even areas that are known for their warm weather are not always tropical paradises. You can check the Weather Channel for climate conditions outside your locale.
2

Step Two

Think light. The last thing you want is to feel loaded down with heavy, bulky sweaters or sweatshirts. It is better to wear two layers of something thin than one layer of something bulky. It actually will help keep you warmer. Additionally, lighter pieces are easier to tuck away into a carry-on, backpack or large purse.
3

Step Three

Look for dual-function pieces. For example, wear a tank-top underneath a lightweight sweater. It will keep you warm in the cold and can be worn alone when it's warm. Pants with detachable legs or legs that roll up into capris are another option. With one quick zip or a couple of rolls, you can go from summer to winter in a flash.

Step Four

Invest in high-tech long underwear. Designers are making ultra-thin pieces that fit seamlessly under a sweater. Removing it when you get to a warmer place will probably require a trip to a restroom, but will be worth it for the reduced bulk.
5

Step Five

Have storage. With an extra bag, you can pull out a sweater if you get cold or tuck one away if the temperature rises. Keeping a winter coat in a airport locker or in your vehicle while you travel could save you the hassle of lugging it around in Mexico or Florida.
