How to Wear Cuff Links

Introduction

Cuff links look great when you really want to dress up your suit. So great, in fact, that when you want to wear cuff links, choose them first and get the shirt and tie to match them. Cuffs secured with cuff links will feel strangely loose at first, but it's worth the discomfort to look so fashionable.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Begin with a shirt that has the right cuffs. You can choose any of three varieties of French cuffs (plain, angle cut or round corner) or get a convertible cuff that has both a button and a buttonhole on the inside of the cuff.
2

Step Two

Turn the swivel post in line with the cuff link and insert it through the buttonholes from the outside to the inside. Turn the swivel post perpendicular to secure the link. This allows you to have the decorated part of the link on the outside of the cuff where it can be seen.
3

Step Three

Secure button style cuff links by sliding one button through both buttonholes. You will have a decorative piece on both sides of the cuff, linked with a short chain.
4

Step Four

Snap clip style cuff links together by putting each half through a buttonhole and attaching them in between.
5

Step Five

Achieve a European look by using monkey knots instead of cuff links. These consist of elaborate silk knots connected by a cord. They are considered as elegant as cuff links.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you really want to look great, get a shirt that requires studs instead of buttons and get studs that match your cuff links.
  • Cuff links range from plain gold, silver or black for funerals to those made from wood or seashells for parties. Select them carefully for the occasion.
