How to Waterproof Your Radio Box
Introduction
Water conducts electricity, and no one wants water in an electrical circuit. Sophisticated solid-state electronics in a radio-controlled model's "radio box" must be sealed to keep out moisture.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Steps
1
Step One
Check the radio box that came with your radio-controlled (R/C) model.
2
Step Two
Make sure the radio box has not been damaged.
3
Step Three
Check the cover of the radio box to ensure that it fits properly.
4
Step Four
Remove the cover.
5
Step Five
Spread a bead of silicone sealant around the top edge of the radio box.
6
Step Six
Use an ample amount of sealant.
7
Step Seven
Keep the bead smooth and uniform.
8
Step Eight
Cover the top of box with waxed paper or plastic wrap before the sealant hardens.
9
Step Nine
Replace the radio box cover as if closing the box.
10
Step Ten
Allow the sealant to harden.
11
Step Eleven
Remove the cover and remove the paper. The box will have an edge that conforms exactly to the dimensions and contour of its lid.
12
Step Twelve
Place facial tissue in empty spaces to absorb moisture and condensation, then close the box.
13
Step Thirteen
Finish making the radio box water-resistant with waterproof tape by neatly covering the line where the cover meets the box itself.
Tips & Warnings
- When the unit is not in use, remove the tissue and open the radio box cover to allow the enclosure to air out.
