How to Water Container Gardens

Choose large pots. Large pots dry out less quickly and will prevent a disaster scenario where your container garden dies because you forgot to water it on a hot day. Plastic and wood pots are also good choices for container gardens because water soaks through clay pots and out of the soil.

Water container gardens more frequently than ground plants. Container plants can not tap into the moisture which ground plants have access too deep within the soil and must be kept moist at all times. Unlike houseplants, container gardens have the full force of the sun to dry out their soil.

Pour water into the soil of container gardens until water begins to flow out the drainage hole after the plants mature. This is a good indicator the soil is saturated with water. When plants are young, you must stop watering before the soil becomes fully saturated.

Supply container gardens more water as the season goes on. Warmer temperatures cause the soil to dry out quicker and the plants will need more water as they grow bigger. Wind also causes containers to dry out rapidly.

Use pure water to prevent salt build-up. Tap water can add salts to your containers which damage plants when it builds up. The water should also be tepid to prevent shocking the roots of the plants with cold water.
