How to Warn Children Against Sexual Predators

Introduction

Despite stiffened laws and increased monitoring, sexual crimes against children remain a constant threat. Children should be aware of this threat. While it's not necessary to live in perpetual fear, children must be wary and conscious of the possibility of being confronted by sexual predators. There are a few ways to teach children how to be cognizant of such situations.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Steps

1

Step One

Communicate openly. Listen carefully to the children's fears and views. Use language appropriate for the age of the child. Avoid details. The purpose is to make them aware but not afraid.
2

Step Two

Tell them to watch for suspicious behavior, even in adults they know. Many times a sexual predator is someone the child knows.
3

Step Three

Engage in specific role-playing scenarios. Acting out different situations helps your child to better understand how to act in, and react to, possible confrontations with sexual predators.
4

Step Four

Discuss the Internet. Many sexual predators prey on children online. Monitor your children's use of computers. Only allow them to meet any friends they have made online when accompanied by a responsible adult.
5

Step Five

Alert them about any real threats that may exist. If a registered sexual offender lives in the community, show the child a picture of the individual. Tell them where the person lives and to avoid any contact with that person.

Tips & Warnings

  • Know where your children are, who their friends are and what they are doing when online.
  • Secrets are bad. Teach your child that they should never keep secrets from parents, especially secrets between them and another adult.
  • Do not allow children to send personal information or pictures online to anyone they don't know.
