How to Vote Using Direct-Recording Electronic Machines

Introduction

Using direct-recording electronic machines has become a popular way to quickly and easily tabulate votes. Direct-recording electronic machines are the newest technology available in the United States. The machines allow a voter to see all ballot information on a computer screen and choose their candidate by touching the screen. The recording system confirms the voter's choice and confirms that the vote has been counted.

Steps

1

Step One

Fill out the voter registration form and mail it in at least 2 weeks before elections. You must be registered to vote in your county in order to visit the polls on election day.
2

Step Two

Show your voter registration card and identification to the precinct official at the polling station for your legal address. This location should be typed on the bottom of your voter registration card that you received in the mail.
3

Step Three

Ask the precinct official to check your name against the registered voter's list and lead you to a privacy booth where you will cast your votes for candidates or issues.
4

Step Four

Read the instructions thoroughly before using any direct recording electronic machines. There should be a prompt on the screen when you first enter the privacy booth that directs you to an information and instructional page.
5

Step Five

Cast your votes for candidates or for issues. Some machines allow the use of a" touch screen," which senses your fingers on the surface of the screen and records your choices. Other machines have a keyboard so you can type in "yes" or "no" or write in candidates.
6

Step Six

Finish casting your votes by following the prompt on the screen. There will be a button that says "finish" or "submit." Once you press this button, your votes are tabulated electronically and counted. Direct-recording electronic machines will automatically reset themselves for the next voter once you confirm the end of your voting session.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • Ask for help if you are confused about something. Poll workers are trained in the computer technology used by voters and are qualified to answer any questions you may have.
  • Remember that you cannot be simultaneously registered to vote in multiple counties.
  • Incorrectly submitted ballots will be rejected and the voter will be prompted to start over again.
  • Direct recording electronic machines are not glitch-free. They are also prone to common technology kinks.
