How to Volunteer to Save the Grand Canyon

Introduction

The U.S. National Park Service manages all of America's National Parks. With the help of thousands of volunteers every year, the Park Service provides camping information, gives tours, repairs trails and conducts conservation seminars. Many volunteers, age 18 and older, help park rangers perform very important tasks that keep our national parks beautiful and accessible. You can help preserve the Grand Canyon National Park by becoming a volunteer during almost any season of the year.

Step One

Search for volunteer positions at the Grand Canyon National Park by visiting the federal government's volunteer website.

Step Two

Read the volunteer position details. Each position has specific participation dates, physical requirements and job responsibilities.

Step Three

Apply online for the position that interests you at the volunteer website. They will contact you if your skills match the Grand Canyon National Park's current needs. Some positions require a background check and documentation of work experience.

Arrange transportation at your expense. Housing is provided unless otherwise noted.

Attend a two to three week training session at the Grand Canyon National Park, when accepted. Training is free and daily meals or meal allowances are provided. Make sure to pack comfortable clothing and footwear.

Tips & Warnings

  • Volunteer demand and positions can vary by season. The Grand Canyon Park has opportunities that range from a one week commitment to 12 weeks or more.
  • In some cases, children under 18 can volunteer at the park, with parental permission.

  • Only U.S citizens, permanent residents and students holding F-1 visas are accepted as volunteers.
  • Grand Canyon National Park provides housing for volunteers, but does not allow spouses or pets. Opportunities for volunteer couples are limited, if housing is needed.
