How to Volunteer for SafePlace

Introduction

Everyone needs a safe place, especially the youth of our society. The organization SafePlace offers just this. Whether you are a "youth in crisis" 18 and under, or an adult wanting to help out, here is some information you will need.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Research on the Internet by going to the SafePlace website. Check the phone book, too, to see if you can find a local listing.
2

Step Two

Find the place on the home page where you can click "Help Us" or anywhere else that applies to getting involved. Click on "Find a SafePlace Program" and enter your state if you are 18 and under and you want to receive services.
3

Step Three

Choose how you want to get involved. You can contribute financially, check out sponsorship opportunities or be a volunteer. If you would like to get help from SafePlace, check out the frequently asked questions under the "Teen Topics" section on the website, or call your local SafePlace facility and tell them you need a SafePlace.
4

Step Four

Donate money. The website has a form you can fill out online to donate money. It asks for credit card information.
5

Step Five

Become a sponsor. Here are some options. Talk--Don't Run Prevention Sponsors will inform more youth and adults concerning the risks and options to running away. Creating Caring Communities Expansion Sponsors help SafePlace spread to all 50 states. In-Kind Opportunities Sponsors give clothing, hygiene products, food and many necessities. Opening New Doors Sponsors sign up their businesses as SafePlace sites and offer to train their employees in case a child comes and asks for a SafePlace.
6

Step Six

Volunteer your time and talents. Find a list of SafePlace communities where you live and get in touch with the SafePlace coordinator listed.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can help National SafePlace when you help with the bi-annual National SafePlace Conference, send information to the surrounding media about at-risk youth and help spread the work about how SafePlace can help them. You can help your local SafePlace by interacting with youth at SafePlace sites, help with SafePlace site preservation, and help with SafePlace education and outreach.
