How to Volunteer for Make a Wish

Introduction

Make a Wish is a non-profit organization which grants wishes to children between the ages of 2 and 18, who have a life-threatening illness. Wishes include anything from a dream vacation to meeting a celebrity. The organization covers all expenses of the wishes they grant. Volunteers are needed to help with wish granting, fundraising, special events and office work. The steps below outline the process to volunteer to help make a child's wish come true.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Locate a chapter in your area. Make a Wish has chapters all over the United States. Go to the national website or look in your local phone book.
2

Step Two

Contact your local chapter. Chapters vary slightly in their application and orientation process. Find out the specific process for becoming a Make a Wish volunteer in your area.
3

Step Three

Attend a volunteer orientation. Some chapters have an online orientation for potential volunteers. Others have scheduled orientations once or twice a month. The orientation will explain volunteer opportunities and time commitments.
4

Step Four

Fill out a volunteer application. Some volunteer positions will also require a background check and a fingerprint check.
5

Step Five

Select an area of interest. Volunteers are needed to help arrange a wish, to organize fundraisers and special projects. Some volunteers work in the office doing mailings and working on newsletters. Other volunteers do promotion work.
6

Step Six

Attend training. Some volunteer assignments will require additional training. For example, Make a Wish volunteers who help grant wishes go through a special training program.
7

Step Seven

Start volunteering. Workout a schedule you will be able to stick with.

Tips & Warnings

  • Talk to your volunteer coordinator if your situation changes. Make a Wish depends on their volunteers and will need to make other arrangements if you need to quit or take a break.
