How to Volunteer at the YWCA

Introduction

The Young Women's Christian Association was founded in the UK in 1855, during the industrial revolution. This organization empowers women and encourages them to become leaders who represent human dignity, justice, health, peace and environmental awareness. The YWCA is represented in 125 countries. The 100 national associations all fall under the umbrella of the World YWCA. Read on to learn more.

Volunteer at the YWCA

Steps

1

Step One

Think about volunteering as a member of the Board of Directors. It is helpful to have managerial or directorial experience.
2

Step Two

Offer your time to help with programs offered by the YWCA. Programs include childcare, parenting classes, empowerment sessions and eliminating racism sessions.
3

Step Three

Help with administrative duties. People who have experience with various office tasks are always welcome.
4

Step Four

Volunteer at a YWCA thrift shop. Retail staff will be responsible for serving customers, accepting and sorting through donations, and opening and closing the shop. High school students can earn credit for their work. Training will be provided.
5

Step Five

Consider volunteering in the Domestic Violence Program. All volunteers for this program must first complete a 40-hour certification training. Other opportunities available through the Domestic Violence Program include visiting organizations to present educational programs, creating support groups, working with attorneys, teaching English as a second language and translation of documents into other languages.
6

Step Six

Offer your professional skills. You can serve as a mentor, speak at events or offer advice in your professional capacity.
7

Step Seven

Be aware that all potential volunteers are required to fill out an application form, go through screening and interviews and attend an orientation. Finger prints and background checks may also be necessary but this will depend on the volunteer position for which you are applying.
8

Step Eight

Know that many other volunteer opportunities exist. Each YWCA chapter maintains a website through which you can find opportunities that suit you. The national YWCA website can help you find the chapter closest to you and provides links to the websites (see Resources below).

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • The YWCA functions independently of the YMCA, although some local YWCA and YMCA chapters choose to serve together.
