Volunteer With the Salvation Army

Steps

1

Step One

Volunteer at your local Salvation Army. Visit the Salvation Army website to find the chapter closest to you (see Resources below).
2

Step Two

Register as a volunteer for emergency disaster services. The Salvation Army responds quickly when disaster strikes and relies on volunteers to help provide emergency services. Visit the website to register for emergency duties in one of the four territorial regions (see Resources below).
3

Step Three

Organize a food drive. You can help collect food for the Salvation Army in your neighborhood, at your church, school, work or from local businesses.
4

Step Four

Volunteer as a bell ringer during the Christmas season. The money collected from bell ringing goes towards improving the various programs and social services offered by the Salvation Army.
5

Step Five

Offer to help at the Salvation Army thrift store. Regular duties will include serving customers, sorting through donations and fixing or washing items in preparation for display.
6

Step Six

Offer your time for food service. Duties may include sorting through the donated food at the food pantry, as well as preparing and serving food at one of the soup kitchens or shelters.
7

Step Seven

Contact your local Salvation Army for other ways in which you can volunteer. Know that volunteer possibilities are many, including anything from administrative duties to language interpretation. Opportunities will vary according to the chapter.
8

Step Eight

Help with fundraising drives. You can provide assistance where needed in preparation for the event and during the event.
9

Step Nine

Consider making a donation. You can make a donation to the Salvation Army at the website (see Resources below). Your gift could be personal, in honor of someone or in memory of someone.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • The Salvation Army needs even more volunteers during the Christmas season.
  • If you plan to donate furniture, be aware that the pick-up service cannot accept office furniture.
