How to Volunteer at the Humane Society
Introduction
The Humane Society of the United States is the largest society concerned with the welfare of animals. The society has programs to fight against the inhumane treatment of animals, especially in such areas as fur trade, the use of animals for sport fighting and sport hunting. Read on to find out the different ways you can volunteer for the Humane Society.

Steps

Step One
Volunteer to help with wildlife support. Duties for wildlife volunteers are varied, including preparing food for the animals according to the recipes provided, cleaning cages and collecting the food and supplies needed. Volunteers should be able to commit to at least 4 hours per week.

Step Two
Help with wildlife care. In this position you will work closely with the animals, feeding, handling and restraining them. You will be scheduled to work at least 4 hours a week.

Step Three
Volunteer as a member of the rescue and transport team. You will be involved in attending to animals in need, rescuing them if necessary and taking them to the Wildlife Center. Volunteers in this capacity will be called as needed.

Step Four
Be part of the on-site assessment team. Members of this team are called as needed to attend to animals in need. If they determine that the animal needs to be rescued, they will put in a call to the Cape Wildlife Center.

Step Five
Volunteer for administrative and project duties. Your ability to use a computer, type, prepare newsletters and other office skills, will be much appreciated in this position.

Step Six
Work with the phone team. Phone team members assist people calling in about animal conflicts, requesting help for animals in need and seeking advice on how to take care of certain animals.

Step Seven
Work with outdoor facility maintenance. Perform duties to maintain a clean appearance such as raking leaves, trimming shrubs and cleaning cages. This position has a flexible schedule.

Step Eight
Volunteer with the construction and maintenance team. Help to build and repair cages and facilities for wildlife. This position requires a commitment of at least one day a month.

Step Nine
Volunteer as an advocate. Help to make phone calls to supporters, perform research and prepare for presentations, amongst other duties.

Step Ten
Volunteer on the HSUS National Disaster Animal Response Team. Educate families and communities on how to prepare pets for catastrophic situations. Help to rescue and shelter animals during emergencies.
