How to Visit the Western Maine Mountains

Introduction

The State of Maine is known as Vacationland, and for good reason. With its mountains, rugged coastlines and pristine National Forests, Maine offers many activities for tourists. Western Maine is filled with crystal clear lakes, majestic mountains, and friendly towns, making it a perfect place for vacationing families.

Steps

Step One

Follow I-95 north to exit 112A to Augusta, the state capital. From there follow Route 27 North to the quaint college town of Farmington located in the Foothills of Western Maine.

Step Two

Continue north on Route 27 to Carrabassett Valley, home of Sugarloaf Mountain. Sugarloaf offers great skiing in the winter and top-rated golf courses in the summer.

Step Three

Travel Route 16 to Rangeley Lake, home of Saddleback Mountain. This popular tourist destination offers activities for all four seasons, including skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, camping, hiking and boating.

Step Four

Return to Farmington via Route 4. Stop and visit Farmington's picturesque downtown and tour the many eclectic shops and art galleries.

Step Five

Leave Farmington and travel west on Route 2 to Sunday River in Bethel, Maine.

Step Six

Play a round of golf one of the state's premier courses in the summer, or spend the day skiing in the winter. Afterwards, visit the charming shops of downtown Bethel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Autumn is a great time to visit Western Maine when the foliage change turns the surrounding countryside into a blaze of crimson, gold and orange. The peak of autumn in Western Maine is usually during the last week of September into the first week of October.
