How to Visit the Tucson Museum of Art
Introduction
Tucson is known for its beautiful mountain ranges, gorgeous spring and fall weather--and even its summer heat. But the city also boasts the Tucson Museum of Art, committed to showcasing life through the magic of art. The museum also features a historic block of old homes, dating from the 1850s, that houses most of the museums galleries.
Instructions
Difficulty: Easy
Steps
1
Step One
Plan at least a half a day to visit and explore this city block-sized museum. It has more than 7,000 pieces in its standing collection and several touring exhibits.
2
Step Two
Follow the guided tour of the historic block. These are offered Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and are free with a paid admission. These houses are some of the oldest homes in Tucson, thought to have been built when Tucson was still a part of Mexico. There are other public tours available at different times during the week. Call the museum at (520) 624-2333 for the schedule.
3
Step Three
Catch a guest lecture in the auditorium. Sometimes members of the docent council speak about the history of certain pieces, or perhaps you can listen to a Native American artist discuss the inspiration for their work.
4
Step Four
Take the kids to a family arts day to create an original piece of art together. Family programs are usually free to attend.
Tips & Warnings
- Located just west of the downtown campus of Pima Community College, parking is metered close to the museum and free if you travel a block down the road.
