How to Visit the San Xavier Mission
Introduction
Southwest of Tucson Arizona, there is a magnificent church in the middle of the desert. The White Dove of the Desert, or San Xavier del Bac Mission, is full of mystery. The church's construction began in 1783 but was never truly finished. There are many theories about when the final dome of the church was to be completed. Visit the site and explore the mystery for yourself.

Steps

Step One
Drive along I-10 east from Tucson and merge onto I-19 south. Exit San Xavier Road and head west, following the sign to the mission. Parking is free.

Step Two
Bring your camera but practice respect. Do not take photos if there are people praying in the church.

Step Three
Notice that the church dome has never been completed. Read about the possible reasons why the dome could not be built.

Step Four
Watch the videotape to learn about the church and its history.

Step Five
Notice the adobe walls of the mission. In some places, the walls are six feet thick, which means the interior stays cool.

Notice that the church is laid out in the shape of a cross. This is one of the finest examples of Spanish mission architecture in the United States.

Step Seven
Come on Sunday and stay for mass. You can enjoy Mariachis and the Tohono O'odham food stands. Try fry bread topped with red chili and beans for an authentic treat.
