How to Visit Yellowstone Bear World
Introduction
Some people might be surprised to discover that despite its name, Yellowstone Bear World is not actually located in Yellowstone National Park. Instead it is located off of U.S. Highway 20, in Idaho, on the way to the famous national park. Bear World takes its name from the dozen of bears, wolves and other wildlife that once made their home in Yellowstone and now live in this refuge. If you are planning a visit to Yellowstone, be sure to stop here along the way.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Steps
1
Step One
Plan your trip for the right season. Bear World is only open from mid May to mid October, so keep that in mind as you decide when to visit.
2
Step Two
Count how many people will be in your party. Bear World charges per person, but they do offer special rates for large groups. If you know how many people you will be traveling with, it will be easier to plan for cost.
3
Step Three
Make a stop at Bear World on your way to or from Yellowstone. In order to get there you have to take the scenic route to, or out of, the park through Southeastern Idaho. U.S. Highway 20 is the road that runs to Yellowstone and Bear World sits along it, 5 miles south of the small town of Rexburg.
4
Step Four
Drive your car or other vehicle. Because the animals are allowed to roam freely within the park, Bear World is only accessible by motor vehicle. It is fun to drive through the animals' habitat and see them up close as they go about their daily activities.
5
Step Five
Stop at the petting zoo before leaving the park. The petting zoo features docile animals, such as sheep, goats, deer and geese. You can hand feed and pet these animals for as long as you like. There is also a place where you can bottle feed bear cubs for a nominal fee.
6
Step Six
Check out the gift shop for a fun souvenir. You can also have your picture taken with the bears, (a digitally enhanced photo) inside the shop.
Tips & Warnings
- Yellowstone Bear World gives discounts to full vehicles, so if you can fill up your car you may save money. Also, hours vary so be sure to call for times before making your trip. The phone number is (208) 359-9688.
