Understand a little of the history before your visit. The vines were originally planted in the 1960s even though some people said that the cold Oregon climate was not good for grapes. In 1976, a pinot noir from one of the area vineyards was chosen by experts over others, and Oregon became known as one of the premier pinot noir-producing areas in the world.

Stay at a bed and breakfast or local quaint hotels. Many lodgings are located in the heart of the wine country so you can submerge yourself in the ambiance.

Plan your trip during special events. The Willamette Valley Winery Association hosts annual county-wide events. Many wineries join in the festivities with live music, fine food, and sales of wines that are in limited quantities.

Know when the wineries you want to visit offer tours. Some are open only certain times of the year or certain days of the week. Many accept tours by appointment only.

Schedule a tour on vans and buses. Many companies offer numerous packages such as private tours or self-guided tours in which they put together an itinerary for you.
