How to View Classified Documents
Introduction
Don't become a prison statistic and avoid the "violated trust" label; familiarize yourself with classified material handling instructions. If you can view classified documents, then you've got a responsibility that most people don't have. Make the government feel good about its decision to give you a clearance; view classified materials properly.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Steps
1
Step One
Make sure that you're up to speed with your annual classified material related training. Understand that if you don't have a clearance, nor a need to know, you shouldn't be looking at classified material.
2
Step Two
Know the procedures for checking classified material out at your work place. The classified material custodian should have a list from your security manager. This list should have names of people with clearances, where they work and what kind of information they're authorized to view. If your name isn't on that list, talk to the security manager about getting your name on that list.
3
Step Three
Contact the custodian in charge of the classified documents that you want to view. Let him know your needs and be prepared to sign forms. Have a courier card with you if the custodian is located in another building.
4
Step Four
Proceed to the custodian and check out the classified documents that you want to view. Your training should let you know the different classification levels and how each paragraph is marked. Those flagged with the marking representing the different levels of classified information shouldn't be discussed through unsecured means.
5
Step Five
Make sure that you're in a space that can't be monitored from outside. Turn your cell phone off and turn it in at the front desk before entering the building. No unauthorized person should see you, or have access to you, while you're viewing classified information.
6
Step Six
Return the classified material to the custodian. Make sure that he signs you off and lets you know that you're good to go. Check to make sure that you're not leaving with something you didn't bring in. Check your pockets and every location to make sure that you're not inadvertently taking something out that you're not supposed to take with you.
7
Step Seven
Don't discuss what you've read to anybody outside of those who have the need to know. Make sure you're inside a space that's marked "secure" before discussing classified material.
