How to Use Your New Deal Photocard

Introduction

New Deal is a U.K. government social assistance program aimed at helping unemployed citizens until they find work. If accepted for the New Deal Scheme, you can apply for a New Deal Photocard. It will qualify you for reduced fare rates on public transport until your situation improves.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Steps

1

Step One

You can get New Deal Photocards only from Jobcentre Plus, which issues them on behalf of the transport services. Your New Deal Personal Adviser (NDPA) helps you fill the application form, decides the duration for which you can have the Photocard and arranges the issue of the Photocard.
2

Step Two

Find out which public transport services support New Deal and which ticket would be most suitable for your route. You cannot have more than one Photocard at a time.
3

Step Three

Buy your tickets at discount rates by showing your New Deal Photocard at the ticket booth. Carry the Photocard during your journey and show it to the ticket checker when required. The maximum duration of a New Deal Photocard issue at any time is three months.
4

Step Four

Use the New Deal Photocard for discounted travel on specified Train Operating Companies, Transport for London and Docklands Light Railway.
5

Step Five

Purchase National Railway tickets on train services in England and Wales at a 50% discount with your New Deal Photocard. You can buy Savers and Supersavers tickets, Standard Day and Open Singles and Return Tickets, Season Tickets of one week up to three months, Cheap Day Singles and Return tickets, Standard Day Singles and Return Tickets and Network AwayBreaks. New Deal Photocard discounts are not available for First Class Travel.
6

Step Six

Save your money by buying a discount-rate Season Ticket for regular train travel. You can get Season Tickets for seven consecutive days of a week, for one month or for three months. For Season Tickets longer than a week, you must complete a Season Ticket application form at the time of purchase.
7

Step Seven

Return the New Deal Photocard to JobCentre Plus when you leave the New Deal program.

Tips & Warnings

  • Scotland has a separate scheme of discount rates travel. Get details from your NDPA.
  • You cannot transfer your New Deal Photocard or the tickets purchased with it to anyone else.
  • Keep your New Deal Photocard safe. If your Photocard gets lost, stolen, torn or becomes illegible, it can't be replaced.
  • If you can't produce your New Deal Photocard when asked for it on public transport, you will have to pay the full standard fare or a penalty fare.
