How to Use META Tags for Business

Introduction

Meta tags combined with keyword rich content can increase traffic to your website. Few searchers bother to view more the first few pages of their search results. When properly used, meta tags can increase your page rank in most popular search engines. Optimize your web pages with meta tags to help search engine spiders and your customers find your business.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You'll Need

  • HTML editor
  • Some knowledge of HTML codes

Steps

1

Step One

Start your website design or redesign by defining your target audience and their primary interests.
2

Step Two

Compile a list of the keywords that your target audience is most likely to type into a search box to find your business or product.
3

Step Three

Open your website editor. If you already have a website page that you want to add meta tags to, open the web page in the editor.
4

Step Four

Go to or create a section between the page's beginning "head" and ending "head" hypertext Markup Language (HTML) codes.
5

Step Five

Enter the following HTML code: meta name="keywords"=content="word1, word2, word3." Substitute the keywords that you compiled. Separate your meta tags terms with a comma and a space.
6

Step Six

Save your optimized web pages. Resubmit them to your web host and search engines.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep all the keywords inside of the quotation marks and the HTML brackets (less than and greater than symbols).
  • For a quick look at how meta tags are used on websites, navigate to a site that interests you. Then choose "View" "Source" or "Page Source" in your browser. You will find the site's meta tags after the "Title."
  • Using a web page editor can give your more control over your website's content. You will not have to learn HTML, but you will need to have some understanding of the rules and syntax.
  • If someone else maintains your site, he can optimize your website by adding HTML meta tags, after you choose the keywords that you need to add.
  • Test your optimized page by loading it in your web browser, to make sure the new meta tags you entered did not interfere with some other code on the web page.
