How to Understand Suzuki Technique

Introduction

The Suzuki technique is an approach to music instruction and instrument playing that has opened the door of music to many very young budding musicians. It has growing popularity all over the world and certified Suzuki instructors can be found in most areas. But before you go off searching for a teacher, it is important to understand a little about how this method differs from more traditional lessons.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Think of Suzuki the same as you think of a child learning to speak. It occurs through exposure, repetition and use, but most importantly it works on the idea that most any child will be able to do.
2

Step Two

Consider starting lessons early. Most Suzuki teachers begin children in lessons between three to five years old. Much like speaking, playing music can develop long before reading and writing skills.
3

Step Three

Plan on listening to recordings of the music your child will learn to play. One of the keys to Suzuki is that children learn how a song should be played by hearing it repeatedly; they will learn to read music later on in the instruction.
4

Step Four

Get ready for the repertoire. Your child will learn a vast collection of songs and will be expected to practice them regularly so that they stay current in the child's mind.
5

Step Five

Get ready to learn along with your child. Suzuki expects that you will be your child's teacher at home, so you need to be ready to pay attention and participate at lessons.
6

Step Six

Dismiss the idea that skills develop by repeating exercises. The music books used in Suzuki do not focus on skill sets, but focus on creating music. Just like a child can speak in a complete sentence long before she can tell you the difference between a noun and a verb, a child can learn a song well before she can tell you the names of the notes.
