How to Understand Engine Codes

Introduction

If you are having trouble with your car, you may need to get a read from the on-board diagnostics system. The on-board diagnostics work by showing a numeric code that will relate to the problem with the car. If you suspect engine trouble, you need to figure out what the codes mean.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Steps

1

Step One

Note the check engine light. This is the first sign that you need to check the engine codes on your car.
2

Step Two

Take the car to a technician to plug your car into a code reader. If you own a code reader, you can skip this step and analyze the codes yourself.
3

Step Three

Check the number that appears on the code reader. Most of the codes appear as a letter and number combination. Each car model will have different codes that are displayed. Make a note of the engine code for analysis.
4

Step Four

Look up the code in a code book or online. You can check your car manufacturer's website for engine codes or find a code book to analyze the reading.
5

Step Five

Use the code to fix the problem with your car. You can let an auto repair shop know the reading or, if you are handy, you can fix the problem yourself.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to save some money, try an auto parts store instead of an auto shop for a diagnostic reading. Many auto parts store will provide a reading free of charge.
  • If you can't get a reading on the engine codes, it could mean that there is a problem with your on-board diagnostics.
