How to Treat Cradle Cap

Introduction

Cradle cap usually appears in the first few months of a baby's life. It appears as dry, flaky skin, or in some cases as thick, oily and brown scaling crust on a baby's scalp. Most pediatricians believe that cradle cap is caused by overactive oil glands. It is common and harmless. Cradle cap is fairly easy to treat, and it usually clears up in a few months.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Rub a small amount of oil such as baby oil, olive oil or mineral oil on the baby's scalp.
2

Step Two

Allow the oil to absorb into the cradle cap for about 10 to 15 minutes.
3

Step Three

Use a soft baby brush and gently scrub it to soften the scales.
4

Step Four

Get a soft cotton wash cloth and wipe it clean.
5

Step Five

Wash hair with some baby shampoo to remove excess oil. Do not leave oil on the head as it will likely clog the pores and cause the flakes to stick.
6

Step Six

Rinse well with water.
7

Step Seven

Dry the baby's scalp.
8

Step Eight

Treat cradle cap daily until it disappears.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • Wash the baby's hair with a mild shampoo two to three times a week once the cradle cap is gone.
  • Do not wash the baby's hair too often as this might stimulate the oil-producing glands.
  • If the baby's scalp itches or if rashes appear under the cradle cap scales, consult a pediatrician.
