How to Treat Anemia Naturally

Introduction

Anemia is a condition that occurs when the blood has a lower-than-normal concentration of red blood cells (RBCs) or the RBCs have a below average amount of hemoglobin. Iron-deficiency anemia is the most common form and the following steps will show how to treat this type of anemia naturally.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Steps

1

Step One

Stop the bleeding. Chronic anemia can be caused by slow bleeding over a long period of time. Any other treatments will be ineffective until this is remedied. If the bleeding is internal, it can be difficult to detect at home.
2

Step Two

Increase the dietary intake of folic acid, iron and vitamin C. Red meat, especially liver is one of the most concentrated sources of iron and is more easily absorbed than iron from vegetables and other foods. Eggs, chicken, fish, pork, turkey and shellfish are all good sources of iron if you don't eat red meat.
3

Step Three

Add more vegetables to your diet. Beans, nuts (including peanut butter), peas and lentils are high in iron. Certain dried fruits such as apricots, peaches, raisins and prunes are good sources also. Check breads, cereals and pastas to see if they have been fortified with iron.
4

Step Four

Include more sources of vitamin C in your diet. These include citrus fruits such as grapefruits, lemons and oranges. Other fruits that are high in vitamin C are apricots, kiwis, mangoes and strawberries. Cabbage, broccoli, any leafy green vegetable, peppers, potatoes and tomatoes are also good sources of vitamin C.
5

Step Five

Treat severe anemia with blood transfusions and iron injections in a hospital setting.
