How to Transport a Harp
Introduction
Harps are large, cumbersome and awkward - a graceful instrument that's difficult to transport gracefully. You can, however, take several steps to ensure that your harp arrives intact at your destination.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Steps
1
Step One
Loosen the strings slightly before transporting your harp. Atmospheric changes can soften glues and stretch the strings, causing damage.
2
Step Two
Use a hard-shelled, foam-lined case for long-distance or air travel. Buy a standard manufacturer's case or order a custom case. These cases should be waterproof and have multiple locks.
3
Step Three
Use your quilted harp cover or a blanket and a cushioned area in your vehicle when taking your harp to a local performance site.
4
Step Four
Transport a pedal-less (Celtic) harp in the back seat of a car using the seat as a cushion base. Many of these smaller harps have removable legs for ease in transport.
5
Step Five
Carry a full-pedal traditional harp in the back of a recreational vehicle or van. Line the hard surface with cushions or blankets to ensure safe transport.
6
Step Six
Wedge cushions against the sides of the harp to make sure it will not slip during transport.
7
Step Seven
Purchase a specially designed harp cart to transfer your harp from your vehicle to your performance site.
8
Step Eight
Find a convenient location to retune your harp once you arrive.
9
Step Nine
Avoid leaving your harp unattended or in an area with a lot of foot traffic.
Tips & Warnings
- Upon arrival at a performance destination, take a few minutes to look around for a safe location to put your harp before getting it out of your vehicle.
