How to Toss a Garter
Introduction
Tossing the garter is a tradition celebrated at many American weddings. Historically, pieces of the bride's clothing were considered lucky and brides in previous centuries were often mistreated as eager wedding-goers snatched at their garments. Nowadays, the lucky (or unlucky) fellow who catches the garter is thought to be the next to get married. Use the following tips to toss the garter successfully at your own wedding.

Steps

Step One
Gather the attention of the crowd and announce the garter toss is about to take place. Ask all unmarried men to come to the center of the room. This is usually done right after the cake is cut.

Step Two
Seat the bride in a chair placed in front of the men. Have her turned sideways to the crowd for discretion during the garter removal. If the toss is being held outside, spread a blanket underneath or near the chair so that the groom can kneel beside her.

Step Three
Have the groom kneel down, discretely pull back the hem of the bride's gown and slowly slide the garter down her leg and off her foot. You may want to play music during this part. Popular selections include a??Another One Bites the Dusta?? by Queen or the James Bond theme song.

Step Four
Stand with the garter in hand. The groom should turn his back to the crowd of men.

Count to three and have the groom toss the garter over his shoulder to the crowd. Or, because garters are elastic, he can fling it by putting it over one finger and pulling it back with his other hand, like one would fling or shoot a rubber band.
Tips & Warnings
- Have a photographer standing ready to capture the moment on film. This is a must for the wedding album.
- Some feistier grooms use their teeth for garter removal, but be advised that your guests may find this practice tacky.
