How to Throw a Harry Potter Theme Birthday Party for Kids
Introduction
If your child is fond of Harry Potter and has a birthday on the horizon, then you're in luck. Planning a Potter theme birthday party is often as much fun as the party itself. With several books full of colorful characters and magical adventures, coming up with ideas for decorations and activities is easy. The hard part is trying to squeeze it all into one afternoon.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You'll Need
- White cardstock
- Cool glue gun
- Cotton balls
- Poster board
- Acrylic paints and brushes
- Large appliance box
- Magic trick kits
- Punch bowl
- Dry ice
- Crepe streamers
- Straw broom
- Sugar cookies and frosting
- Helium-filled balloons
Steps
1
Step One
Make pillow-style party invitations by printing clipart of an owl on white cardstock. Cut out the shape using two pieces of cardstock so that one has the picture and the other is blank. On the blank shape write out the invitation giving the party details and then place the two shapes back to back. Cool-glue them about three-quarters of the way around and then stuff several cotton balls inside similar to stuffing a pillow. Then glue it shut the rest of the way and hand deliver.
2
Step Two
Use posterboard and acrylic paints to create three signs for your front door. On one side of your door hang a sign that says "Platform 9" and on the other side have one say "Platform 10." Then over the door put one that says "Platform 9 3/4." Paint a picture of a locomotive engine on an empty appliance box and stand it by the door so the porch resembles a train station.
3
Step Three
Drape black and purple crepe streamers from the ceiling and hang signs on the walls with the names of various houses at Hogworts'. They are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Ravenclaw. Then paint the handle of a straw broom a dark brown color and add the words "Nimbus 2000" to it. Attach some birthday balloons and stand it in the corner of the room.
4
Step Four
Set up a table with items to perform several different magic tricks and let the kids practice and play with them while waiting for the other party guests to arrive. You can buy a couple of kits and scatter the items around the table. Copy the directions and leave them on the table so the kids can follow them.
5
Step Five
Serve punch from a large bowl and place a tall glass in the center filled with dry ice. Be sure the glass is tall enough that the punch doesn't get in it, and periodically pour a little water on it so that it smokes. Serve it in plastic wine goblets alongside some bowls of Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans. Instead of birthday cake, serve sugar cookies in the shape of brooms and let the kids decorate them.
6
Step Six
Play a version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey called Pin the Glasses on Harry. Enlarge a picture of Harry Potter without his glasses and tape it to the wall. Then print pictures of his glasses off your computer and cut them out for the kids to try to tape on the picture of Harry while blindfolded.
7
Step Seven
Send your guests home with a treat sack filled with Harry Potter theme party favors like magic wands, gold foil covered chocolate coins and magic tricks. Attach a note thanking guests for coming to the party and helping to celebrate the birthday child's special day.
