How to Tell Crotch Rockets from Cruiser Motorcycles

Introduction

If you're new to motorcycles, it may be difficult to tell the difference between all of the different styles. Two of the most popular designs are crotch rockets and cruiser motorcycles. If you need some help distinguishing between the two, just follow the steps below.

Step One

Get to know the cruiser. Cruisers are designed with comfort in mind. Riders sit on the bike with their feet forward and their hands up. Their backs are straight or reclined slightly back, much like someone sitting in a chair. Cruisers are great bikes for riding long distances because of their comfort. However, their body design limits their performance and turning ability.

Step Two

Learn about crotch rockets. These are sport bikes that are made to go fast. Riders sit with their feet towards the back of the bike and their hands low. They are usually leaning forward in the seat, making them more streamlined with the bike for greater speed and agility. Their design gives riders great control and allows crotch rockets to remain stable when taking corners at high speeds.

Recognize the size differences. Although there are variations, crotch rockets are usually smaller and lighter than cruisers to improve their speed and handling.

Be aware of the different images associated with cruisers and crotch rockets. Cruisers are classic bikes that appeal to many people. Someone who rides a cruiser is looking for a relaxing, enjoyable ride. Crotch rockets are all about speed. Riders want to go fast and live dangerously. Unfortunately, crotch rocket accidents aren't uncommon.
