How to Teach Rhythm Using Instruments

Introduction

Children love making music and moving to the rhythm. Teaching rhythm using instruments is a fun way for children to learn various rhythmic patterns. Young children can learn to copy rhythmic patterns as well as create their own. Here are a few tips to teach children rhythm using instruments.

  • Drum
  • Maracas
  • Tambourine

  • Toilet paper roll
  • Rice
  • Beans
  • Pebbles

Steps

Step One

Gather various instruments such as a drum, maracas, tambourine, sticks and egg shakers. Collect several instruments that make different sounds so the children can experiment with varying sound qualities.

Step Two

Choose an instrument to start the music circle. Have children sit in a circle. Tap out a specific beat on an instrument, and then have the children take turns copying that beat. Assist children who are having trouble by repeating the rhythm.

Step Three

Use different rhythmic patterns on each turn. Tap the rhythm and call out the rhythm. Say "slow, slow, fast, fast, fast" or "1, 2, 1-2-3." Some children may learn better by listening to the sound on the instrument while others may learn better with a verbal cue.

Step Four

Encourage the children to play making a loud sound. Try tapping out a very soft sound. Have students differentiate between quiet and loud by saying, "We are going to play like the rain. Now we are going to play like thunder."

Step Five

Experiment with playing the instruments smoothly and sharply. Ask students to play the instrument like a wave so they can visualize a smooth sound. Then ask them to play like lightning to express sharpness.

Step Six

Give each child his own instrument. Let students create their own music and their own rhythmic patterns. Encourage students to practice what you have taught during circle time. Remind them to play with varying rhythmic patterns and sound qualities.

Step Seven

Have children make their own instruments for a fun activity. You can use a toilet paper roll filled with rice, beans or pebbles. Have students use their instruments to create their own rhythmic pattern.
