How to Teach Children About Gay Issues
Introduction
Teaching children to understand gay and lesbian issues is sensitive and possibly confusing. With so many anti-gay attitudes, it may be difficult to teach your children to respect homosexuals as human beings. Regardless of your personal opinion on homosexuality, homosexuals are part of our society, and children must understand the issues in a non-judgmental way.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderate
Steps
1
Step One
Determine your own values, and don't be caught off guard by questions your child asks.
2
Step Two
Discuss the issue with your child, and don't try to hide that it exists. Kids aren't stupid, and they know when you're keeping things from them.
3
Step Three
Introduce your children to various types of family situations such as single-parent households, heterosexual, married couples with children, and same-sex partners with children. Chances are one of their school friends has two moms or dads.
4
Step Four
Talk about the loving aspect of the relationship and not the sexual side, just as you would with any other type of family relationship.
5
Step Five
Point out some gay role models, be it a celebrity or someone you know.
6
Step Six
Encourage your child to ask you questions and then answer them directly and honestly. If you don't know the answer to a question, tell you child you don't know and then find out together.
