How to Switch From Religion to Atheism

Introduction

Atheists question the existence of God. They aren't out to destroy religion as much as question it by searching for empirical evidence. But, because of religion's strong social grasp on our society, it can be difficult to let go of religious practices even when you doubt there's a divine being.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Steps

1

Step One

Examine the religion you have experienced. Read portions of the scriptures that have stuck in your mind over the years and are the most difficult to let go of. Read scholarly books about the history of your religion to understand the full context.
2

Step Two

Learn what atheism really is. Positive Atheism is an online magazine that offers an extensive FAQ, answers to readers' questions and articles.
3

Step Three

Decide whether you don't believe in the existence of God or are unsure. Agnosticism covers the possibility of a divine being and shares many aspects of atheism, including many misconceptions.
4

Step Four

Clarify what it is in your religion that you doubt and why. You need to explain to yourself, and eventually to others, why you can't believe its teachings about God.
5

Step Five

Study philosophical texts from those who've questioned the existence of a divine being. Positive Atheism has a section of writings from authors such as Bertrand Russell, Voltaire and even Mark Twain to get you started.
6

Step Six

Talk to other atheists about their outlook. Just as religious believers are of all types, atheists hold different attitudes about moral conduct, the meaning of religion and the nature of our existence.
7

Step Seven

Keep a journal to explore your beliefs. Criticize what you read about your religion and hear from other atheists. Formulate your own version of atheism.
