How to Survive a Mosh Pit

Introduction

Seeing a mosh pit for the first time at a live concert can be a shocking experience. However, after the initial shock, you will find that they are by far one of the most exhilarating aspects of the rock concert experience. There are a few things you'll need to know in order to survive the onslaught of slam-dancing and achieve the respect and camaraderie of your fellow pit-goers.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Steps

1

Step One

Prepare yourself mentally for what you are about to get yourself into. Make your way to the edge of the pit to survey the scene, and decide whether or not this is a mosh pit you what to get into. Pits vary drastically from show to show, with some being much more violent than others, so make sure you're ready for the blood, sweat and tears.
2

Step Two

Position yourself at the edge of the pit, and time your entry so you don't trip and get trampled. It helps to enter while the band is playing a song you are familiar with so you can be prepared for the changes of speed and intensity that the pit parallels with the music.
3

Step Three

Keep moving with the flow of the mosh pit and use your arms as bumpers against the other concertgoers.
4

Step Four

Be friendly with your slamming, but don't be a pushover and let others use you as a pinball.
5

Step Five

Help anyone who loses his step back up to his feet. This is a cardinal rule of the mosh pit and must be observed at all times. You'll understand why when it's you on the ground looking for someone to pick you up.
6

Step Six

Relax and don't panic if you find yourself on the ground. Cover your head with one arm and reach up with your other hand as quickly as you can, and someone will come and swoop you up.
7

Step Seven

Have a positive attitude, and you'll find that most of the time even the meanest moshers will respond to your enthusiasm. Mosh pits are all about sharing the concert experience and releasing the feelings that the music conjures. Above all, remember to have fun.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stay as hydrated as possible throughout the concert. If you start to feel faint in the mosh pit, make your way to the edge of the pit and get to a place where you can get some air and water.
  • Be aware of the people in the pit who came to the concert for no other reason than to hurt as many people as they can, and do your best to steer clear of them.
  • Find as many allies in the pit as you can and stay in sight of them or the friends you came to the concert with in case of any trouble.
  • Smaller individuals, especially small women, should be extremely careful when entering the pit. These are violent places and you need to be prepared to at least get a couple of good bruises, or possibly something more serious.
