Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Steps

1

Step One

Rest up. The night before you plan to stop smoking, get plenty of sleep. Sleep deprivation will add to agitation, and you will need to cut back on as many agitating factors in the next five days.
2

Step Two

Rise early. On the first day, the best way to break your habit of reaching for a cigarette will be to take a walk when you get up. This will start the blood flowing and get your body used to deep breathing without smoking. Before you leave the house eat a healthy breakfast of fruits and grains, and drink lots of water. The fruit and water will help you rid your body of the nicotine in your system, and help to cut down on cravings.
3

Step Three

Walk often. After each meal, preferably of fruits and veggies, take a five minute stroll and practice deep breathing. Continue to tell yourself that you no longer want to smoke. You can be your worst enemy when trying to quit smoking, so be sure to hold tight to your mantra in the next five days.

Step Four

Keep your mouth occupied. Use sugarless mint or gum to keep your mouth busy. In order to stop smoking in five days you will need to adopt some new habits in that time to help you in staying away from cigarettes. Nibble on fruits and veggies if you feel the urge to stuff your face, this will help you cut down on the tendency to over eat while quitting.
5

Step Five

Avoid other smokers and alcohol in this five day period. Try to avoid over eating as well, as the feeling of being full tends to make ex-smokers want to light up.
6

Step Six

Keep your hands and mind busy. The irritable feeling that you experience in the first few days will pass as your body rids itself of the nicotine. When you are feeling shaky and ready to break down, stay busy and distract yourself and the urge will pass.
