How to Stay the Night in a Historic Building

Introduction

Staying the night in a historic building can be a powerful experience. You are living in the space once occupied by people who shaped history and life beyond their times. For one night, you are the lord or lady of the manor, free to stroll around the garden or retreat to the drawing room. The problem is booking a night.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Landmark Trust is the company that preserves and rents out historic buildings (see Resources below).
2

Step Two

Know your historic buildings. Every house the Landmark Trust has preserved has a distinctive history. Look at the list of houses on the Landmark Trust website, research them and decide which of the buildings appeal.
3

Step Three

Alternatively order a handbook via post or telephone. The cost for a book is between ?£11-15, depending on where you live, and comes with a price list. The telephone number is (01628) 825925. Landmark Trust gives priority to telephone calls. If you want a quick answer to an enquiry, it is best to phone the booking office rather than contacting them by email or letter. Landmark Trust does not take online bookings.
4

Step Four

Check availability. The Landmark Trust website lists the current availability of all their historic buildings. There is also a late availability list.
5

Step Five

Get a pricelist. A price list is not available on the website, but you can phone the booking office to get one. The telephone number is (01628) 825925.
6

Step Six

Reserve your building early by contacting the booking office. The opening times are Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not want to pay for a landmark trust handbook, you can find the history of a building by Googling its name.
  • Historic buildings come with all modern enmities, including heating, electricity, beds made on your arrival and bathrooms.
