How to Start a Charcoal Fire in a Coffee Can
Introduction
Using lighter fluid is certainly the easiest and most common way to start charcoal, but there are times when it may not be readily available. If you ever find yourself in that situation, or just don't want to lug around lighter fluid, knowing how to use a coffee can to start a charcoal fire will have you cooking in no time.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Steps
1
Step One
Punch several holes around the lower edge of an empty coffee can and remove both ends with a can opener to create a sleeve. You will need at least a 2-lb sized can for this method, though a larger one will work as well.
2
Step Two
Set the sleeve in the center of the grill or fire pit with the holes at the bottom, and place a layer of crumpled newspaper inside. Fill only the lower third of the can so you have room for the charcoal.
3
Step Three
Fill the rest of the can with charcoal and light the paper through the punched holes in the bottom of the can. The cylinder will act as a flue to draw the flame up through the charcoal.
4
Step Four
Lift the hot sleeve with tongs once the coals are glowing and allow them to continue to heat before cooking. The coals will be ready when they turn gray.
5
Step Five
Check the coals to see if they are hot enough for cooking by placing your hand about five inches above the surface of the coals. If you can hold your hand there five to six seconds, the fire is not hot enough for barbecuing. When the coals are at an ideal cooking temperature, you shouldn't be able to keep your hand that close more than three to four seconds.
6
Step Six
Sprinkle the embers with salt or water after cooking to prevent the fire from flaring up again.
Overall Tips & Warnings
- When using a grill, place it in a location that is protected from the wind, because a fire fanned by wind burns unevenly.
- Be sure to keep the grill at a safe distance from anything flammable.
- Don't get too close to the coals, even when initially checking the temperature.
