How to Spend a Weekend in Derry

Introduction

While weekending in Derry, or Londonderry, you could tour a host of historic buildings; the city is surrounded by one of the only city walls in Europe never to have been breached. This Northern Irish city is worth a visit and the following steps will help you make the most of your weekend.

Step One

Visit the Derry homepage (link below) and request a free brochure. This comes with a map and visitor guide.

Step Two

Book a place to stay. You can do this online via the Derry homepage. It has a list of accommodation including hostels, hotels and bed and breakfasts and all of the contact details.

Step Three

Fly to the City of Derry airport from London Stansted, Glasgow or Liverpool. A ferry can also be caught from Liverpool to Belfast and from there you can either drive or take a bus or train to Derry.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can get to Dublin from the ferry port in Holyhead in Wales, and go to Derry from there.

Step One

Work out the transport system. The best way to get around Derry is by bus and it is recommended you buy a day pass. A link to the Ulsterbus service is below.

Step Two

Visit St Columbs Cathedral. Built in 1636 this is the oldest building in the city and home to some of Derry's most impressive artefacts.

Step Three

Exercise at the Croggan Country Park. This is home not only to beautiful park, but a lake where you can rent boats.

Step Four

Experience traditional Ireland at the Craft Village. This small area has coffee shops, craft shops and a host of entertainment outside including Irish dancing.

Step Five

Understand the history of Derry. The Tower museum has everything you need to know about the city and the surrounding county.
