How to Spend Money Overseas

Introduction

No one really needs advice on how to spend money overseas: a trip to Europe, the Far East, or other destination is definitely going to take a bite out of your bank account. However, there is a question of what currency to use: ATM, travelera??s checks, credit card, cash, a combination of all four? One thing is certain: youa??re going to need some money on hand when you go on vacation.

Contact your credit card company before you leave. You may need to set up a different pin number for foreign travel. Additionally, it may look strange for there to suddenly be hundreds of dollars being charged in a foreign country. You could risk your card being frozen.

Make sure that your ATM card does not charge hefty fees for overseas withdrawal. If it does, you might have to think about applying for a new card. There may also be a higher APR on a credit card for foreign purchases.

Get some currency at home before you fly. You want to have some cash on hand as soon as you land. In addition, the currency exchange rate can be unfavorable near the airport or tourist destinations.

Apply for travelera??s checks for just-in-case money. With the convenience of ATM cards, theya??re not used as often as the past, but they're useful if your wallet is lost or stolen.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • Ideally, youa??ll use a combination of all types of currency. Ita??s better to put big purchases on a credit card and pay for smaller items with cash.
  • If youa??re going to be in a remote location where a bank might not be present, be sure to withdraw some cash ahead of time.
  • Most foreign banks will provide a currency exchange calculator. These calculators can be found online as well.
  • The Euro has made currency exchange a lot easier if youa??re traveling around Europe, as you wona??t have to hassle with exchange rates.
  • Dona??t carry too much cash at any one time. Pickpockets are rampant, especially around tourist destinations.
  • Dona??t withdraw a lot of cash if youa??re traveling to another country with a different currency. You may find an unfavorable currency exchange in the next country on your itinerary.
