How to Sharpen a Trowel Blade

Introduction

Digging tools need sharp blades - even the humble trowel will perform better if you keep it sharp. Here's how.

Steps

Use a flat metal bench file to sharpen the trowel.

Step Two

Sharpen the curved inner edge of the blade.

Place the file at a 45-degree angle on the edge of the blade.

Keep the file at the same angle and sharpen in only one direction, not back and forth. Just a few passes with the file should make a sharp cutting edge.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use a sharpening stone, but it will take much longer than a metal file.
  • Sharpen the trowel frequently while working in hard or rocky soil. Rocks will dull even the sharpest blades quickly.
