How to Sew a Blanket Inside a Duvet Cover

Introduction

We will learn how to make a blanket out of a duvet cover and a blanket you don't like any more or is old and worn.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You'll Need

  • duvet cover
  • blanket approximately the same size (it will be completely covered up, so make sure it's one you're not too fond of)
  • sewing machine
  • thread that matches duvet cover
  • scissors
  • pins

Steps

1

Step One

Turn the duvet cover inside out, then pin the old blanket to the duvet cover. In my case the blanket was smaller than the duvet cover, so I pinned the left side right up against the side of the cover. I then pinned the bottoms together. By this point I had about 9 inches of duvet cover remaining on the right side.
2

Step Two

Cut off any excess. I moved up the right side, measuring 9 inches and pinning the two together. Then I cut along the right edge of the old blanket. I did the same with the top, since I had extra cover on the top too.
3

Step Three

Sew the left, bottom, and right edges together, and 6 inches in on each side of the top. We're not sewing the whole top yet because you have to turn it back right side out. I left about a 1/2 inch seam allowance.
4

Step Four

Turn it right side out, making sure that all the corners are pushed out all the way. Flatten it all out and look at it. Does it look all right?

From right to left, sew straight seams from the bottom of the quilt up to the top. Always sew in the same direction because otherwise the fabric will not stay correctly lined up and might wrinkle. I spaced my seams about 16 inches apart. You'll have to roll the quilt up so that it fits into the sewing machine space on the right. Sew a nice finishing seam around the left, bottom, and right edges. Mine was in about 3 inches.

Pin the top, folding the ragged edges in and making a nice 1/2 inch seam. Finally, sew the top, pulling out the pins on the way.
